Although the club had a record four teams in action on the night, Ealing B were still able to field a team, which proved a bit too strong for a plucky Maidenhead side.

It was great to see Simon Healeas back at the board looking fit and well despite his recent traumatic adventures in India. Although his opponent arrived some fifteen minutes late, Simon was still first to finish with a clinical win in 18 moves.

Chris Greenshields also made short work of his opponent. So short in fact, I saw little of how the win was achieved, but it put Ealing well on path to victory, although the gap narrowed when George Zusin, still suffering from the flu, lost concentration and the game from a position a piece up.

Around about this time, I also blundered in a typically complex Morra Gambit and was soon left with a hopeless position.

Happily John Harvey and Miguel Sanchez saved my blushes by delivering further wins and with it the match point.

So a good week's work has brought Ealing back into the promotion race with 5/6 and 6 matches to come. The league web site is a little behind with recent results, but best guess of current positions is as follows:

  1. Staines B 4.5/5
  2. Ealing B 4/5
  3. Hayes B 3.5/4
  4. Eton Coll. 3/6
  5. Hounslow B 2.5/6
  6. Wimbledon D 2/3
  7. Wimbledon C 2/4
  8. Maidenhead C 1.5/4
  9. Ealing C 1/5
  10. Meadhurst A 1/4
  11. Richmond D 0/1
  12. Surbiton C 0/5
