Guys, last Thursday we hosted Meadhurst in our first game of 2009.
On board 6 your captain managed an early win against a moderately rated player and was able to enjoy the rest of the match as a spectator. A little later James Pack on board 3 tidied up nicely to bring home the full point whilst on board 5 Steve Gibbs notched up his first win for the team after sacrificing a rook to expose his opponent's king to a mating attack. 3-0 to Ealing at half-time so to speak.
The match win was assured soon afterwards when on board 2 Harvey Grewal 's game finished as a draw. Harvey , however, was kicking himself since he was at one stage in a highly advantageous position one pawn up with more to drop and queens off the board, but unfortunately left a knight en-pris. He was subsequently pleased to accept his opponent's offer of a draw. 3.5 - 0.5 to Ealing.
Whilst all this was going on Raj Jhooti had entered a R+P endgame materially even, but his opponent's rook penetrated the seventh rank and his queen side pawns fell like the proverbial dominoes. 3.5 - 1.5 to Ealing.
At the call of time this all left Simon Healeas on board 1 a pawn up in a R+P endgame. Simon declined his opponent's offer of a draw and the game has been submitted for adjudication claiming a win.
Thus we comfortably achieved our first victory of the season to give us a record of one win, two draws and three defeats from six games. With five games to play there is still plenty of opportunity to achieve a good position in the league so let us go for it.
