Ealing A 5 Surbiton A 2

After last week's win over Staines, Ealing achieved another important victory yesterday, this time over visitors Surbiton.

Surbiton have been major challengers for the Thames Valley championship in recent years so it was vital that we benefit by our home advantage. Our title win last year was founded on our invincibility at the Harvester and we hope that it will be the same this season although regular readers of this website will note that we were much less convincing victors this week than last when I was unavailable to play!
Adrian Ociepka led the way with a sparkling quick win with the White pieces over his opponent's Sicilian Defence and because of an unfortunate default for Surbiton on board eight, Ealing took a two-nil lead. Surbiton hit back with a victory on board one but Simon Randall restored the two point gap with classical play down the centre files. My Sicilian Defence managed to defy an imaginative pawn sacrifice by my adversary and Sainbayar Tserendorj came out top in a frantic time scramble on board six. Veljko Stanisic has been in fantastic form this season but last night he suffered his first defeat of the season.
The evening ended with Ealing holding an unassailable 5-2 lead with one board still to be decided.
