Geoff Richards writes:
First out of the blocks was Amars Sachdev on board 6 who, despite arriving 15 minutes late, was nonetheless the first to finish, putting on his coat to go home only 14 moves and 15 minutes later having checkmated his opponent. 1-0 to Ealing.
Next to finish was James Pack on board 3 who unfortunately allowed his queen to become trapped during the middlegame. 1-1.
Simon Healeas on board 1 then overcame his opponent (a late substitute for a non appearance) but unfortunately your captain playing on board 5 let slip what should have been a decisive material advantage and had to concede. 2-2
This left everything hinging on the remaining two games that finished more or less simultaneously. On board 2, Harvey Grewal needed no second invitation to grab two pawns in an obscure gambit opening and held on, giving his opponent not a ghost of a chance. Finally, Raj Jhooti registered his first win for the team with an elegant back row mate. This was no more than Raj deserved having played enterprising and attacking chess all season for absolutely no reward. More please Raj!
So, rather like last season we are coming good after Christmas and moving towards a position of mid-table respectability. I believe, however, that we are capable of better and must therefore maintain the momentum to drive towards an above average position.
