Geoff Richards reports: Following our 4-2 win at Richmond last Thursday we travelled to Maidenhead for our second away game in five days to achieve an identical result!
On board 5 your captain managed to contrive a pawn advantage and was looking forward to practising his end game technique when his youthful opponent obligingly overlooked a mate in one to save him the trouble. 1-0 to Ealing.
On board 3 David Reichenberg quickly won the exchange and ruthlessly ground out the full point. 2-0 to Ealing.
This was quickly followed on board 2 by Raj Jhooti who also won the exchange early on and despite the distraction of his opponent's passed pawn always held the initiative and secured the win. 3-0 to Ealing.
On board 1 Simon Healeas, noting the match position, offered his opponent a draw that was gratefully received. 3.5 - 0.5 to Ealing and the match won.
On board 4 Jerry Ball lost a pawn in complications early on but managed to regain it and hold the draw. 4-1 to Ealing.
Meanwhile on board 6 Amars Sachdev lost material early on and despite much cussedness could not retrieve the situation and had to concede his first defeat of the season for this team. Final score 4-2 to Ealing.
Following our by now customary poor start to the season we have won our last three matches to put ourselves on an even keel with a record of 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats. Our remaining games are at home to the second and third placed teams (Staines B and Wimbledon C) and away to the bottom team (Surbiton C). We still have plenty to play for and may even be able to help the B team!
