Chris Greenshields writes: Ealing 2 came down to earth with a bump at Hackney last night. We turned up with 7 players, every attempt to fill the team being thwarted in the days leading up to the match. Hackney's 2nd team was strong, with 160+ players on the top 4 boards and other strong players lower down.

The match got off to a bad start when I foolishly castled into an attack and missed a nasty tactic that ended the game very quickly. Salim's game also finished in defeat fairly quickly. Harvey too succumbed fairly quickly, disappointed in his performance. So 4-0 to Hackney.

Rays of hope emerged on board 2 where Syrym won the exchange and had his opponent's king exposed, which he later converted into a point. Alastair seemed comfortable for most of the game and also subsequently won with good careful play.

But the renewed hope did not last long. John was beaten by a strong attack from a very good opponent and Simon dropped a bishop to a very smart tactic that even Hackney's board 1 struggled to spot.

So we lost 6-2. A miserable night ending with a very difficult drive home in truly horrendous rain.
