Coming into this match, Wimbledon D were, along with the Wimbledon third string, our principal rivals for promotion from Division 3 of the Thames Valley League. After this convincing win however, with our superior 'goal difference', Ealing B should now be mathematically sure of promotion, irrespective of the outcome of the unfinished match against Wimbledon C.
With Wimbledon looking strong on paper, a tense evening seemed in prospect. But, as events unfolded, the match was far from a cliffhanger with a series of basic errors sealing Wimbledon's fate.
Nick Collacott got the ball rolling with a ten-move mate when his opponent obligingly missed a straightforward mate in one. With Dale Gibbons' opponent defaulting and John Harvey completing another rapid win, Ealing were 3-0 up before nine o'clock. Shortly after, Miguel Sanchez wrapped up the match win with a calm draw on Board 2.
On the remaining boards, yours truly managed to deliver a successful mating attack and Tony Wells completed the rout when his opponent caught the spirit of the evening, inexplicably leaving his Queen en pris when in a good position.
Congratulations and thank you to all the TV2 squad for what has been a tremendous season. Sterner challenges await in Div.2 next year!
