Hatch End A (Eastcote A) 4 Ealing B 1 (Hillingdon Cup)

Ealing B lose out to a strong Hatch End A team in round 1 of the Hillingdon League Cup.

Pierre Davis writes: It was always going to be a tough night, playing a team who normally play two divisions above us and so it proved.

On board 1, I found myself with an isolated d-pawn, which my opponent picked on and squashed. Then he had a passed pawn which I tried to blockade but doing so was ruinous to my position and when he had an easily won ending after 38 moves, I resigned.

On board 2, Amardeep made a mistake, fell foul of the touch-move rule and eventually lost.

On board 3, new member Andy Cowdroy couldn't find the courage to play what would have been a winning sacrifice and at the end of a tense game, his queen was trapped, so he resigned.

On board 4, Richard Mwangi weathered an early attack, defended skillfully and when his 120+ opponent suddenly found that the tables had been turned and he was looking at mate-in-one, he resigned. Well done Richard and a great start to the season!

On board 5, Jerry Blick's game was a tussle, with both players having good positions at different times, but eventually his opponent prevailed.  Final score 4-1 to Hatch End A, so we have 'qualified' for the plate.  Next game is at home to Greenwood on November 1st.
