Richmond A 3 - Ealing A 5
: Created:23 Oct 2009 , byAfter being crushed at Richmond last season, Ealing were delighted with this victory decided at 10.45pm on board five. We were doubly pleased that one of our wins was scored by an old friend returning after a year's absence from our playing strength.
Alan Perkins led from the front with a masterly win on board one over experienced Michael Franklin. The game proceeded in logical stages with Alan securing an early positional advantage which he converted into a strong bind with a protected passed pawn on d6 and a dominating knight on c5 and when a second passed pawn joined in on e5 threatening e6 with Michael Franklin not having a scintilla of counterplay, Michael had to resign.
Sainbayar Tserendorj secured his second win in five days for Ealing with a nice victory over Richard James. Sainbayar won Richard's pawn on a5 and after exchanges showed great technique in a rook and pawns endgame to penetrate with his king into his opponent's central position while using his outside passed pawn as a decoy. Veljko Stanisic and Miguel Sanchez secured steady draws with the Black pieces.
Jurgen Jakob who was a rock for Ealing Chess Club for nearly ten years but now lives in Germany when he isn't on business trips all over the world, fetched up in England yesterday and we had great pleasure in drafting him into our team even though the number of serious games he has played in the last two years can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The middlegame looked difficult for Jurgen with his king still in the centre and his opponent's minor pieces active and rooks attacking down the e and d files. However Jurgen is a very resourceful player indeed and at the cost of a pawn created difficulties for Chris Baker who because of traffic problems on the way to the match was short of time. Chris overstepped the time limit on his twenty-ninth move to give Ealing a lucky full point and a 4-1 lead.
Richmond were not finished though and courageously fought back. An isolated pawn of Tony Wells came under fire and he had to give best to Julien Shepley. Simon Randall's game was extremely complicated but if truth be told, John Bass' two bishops and dominating knight on d5 always gave him the advantage and he broke through soon after the first time control with a pretty mating combination. Richmond 3 - Ealing 4.
Martin Smith faced the tricky Alekhine Defence and early play was double-edged. Gradually Martin got on top and an invaluable White knight on e5 controlled a lot of squares although his adversary's knight on d5 was no mean piece either. Along the way Martin grabbed a couple of pawns and when he gave up a pawn in order to exchange queens his combined passed pawns on the a and b files quickly secured victory for him and the Ealing team.
Ealing were White on odd numbered boards.
