Hammersmith 1sts 1 - Ealing 1sts 7
: Created:27 Oct 2009 , byEaling got themselves back to 50% with a handsome victory at Hammersmith in the first division of the Middlesex League.
It was Veljko Stanisic's smooth performance that got us on our way because with very little expenditure of time he achieved a winning rook and pawn endgame on board three. I backed him up with a twenty move win but handling of complications and the clocks are not my forte and a rotten 17th move was nearly my undoing.
Alan Perkins played the Hedgehog Defence and won a piece although he tells me that it was the result of an oversight by his opponent but when Sainbayar Tserendorj inevitably beat a Hammersmith stand-in, Ealing were four-nil up and could not lose.
The winning point was achieved by Simon Healeas who came late into the team and did not let us down in the slightest because his excellent play broke down a stubborn opponent.
A set back on board six made the score line more respectable for Hammersmith but meantime John Quinn and Simon Randall were carefully and accurately nursing material advantages and the only mystery to their thirsty Ealing team-mates was why they were taking so long about it while the pubs were still open. However we, somewhat reluctant spectators stuck with it and we got the best of both worlds when John and Simon brought home the points bacon and we had a decent drink at the local.
The only blot on the evening was when our Thames Valley captain explained to our Middlesex captain how he could have saved £3.80 in parking fees by putting his car on the opposite side of the street. Grrr...
