European Team Championship
: Created:28 Oct 2009 , byWe play tribute to four British players competing in Novi Sad who are known to our club. With three English perfomers on view it is a little controversial to single out Athenaeum's Jim Stevenson for particular praise but I understand that Jim encouraged the cash-strapped Scottish Chess to field a team even though every member had to pay their own way. After six rounds Jim, the second lowest graded player in the tourney was doing well on board four and outperforming his own board one!
Meri Grigoryan-Lyell was competing for West London at the Harvester in May but in Serbia she is scoring well for the England Women's team on board four. Congratulations!
A couple of years ago Sainbayar Tserendorj and Syrym Shalabayev, mainstays of Ealing chess club organised a very pleasant rapidplay tournament in a Surrey hotel at which Stephen Turner and Simon Williams competed. Dare I ask if this was the event that propelled them to greater things because both are now performing with distinction in England's Open team?
