Ealing 5.5 - Hackney 2.5
: Created:19 Nov 2009 , byA good win for Ealing tonight in our home match versus Hackney I in division one of the Middlesex league. John Quinn, Alan Perkins, Veljko Stanisic, Adrian Ociepka and Simon Randall were our winning stars.
Veljko Stanisic was our first winner with a handy victory over Hackney regular, John Tennyson but we had a reverse on board three where Tom Quinn, an American with a very reasonable transatlantic rating, made his debut for Ealing. Old adversary, (but esteemed team mate for Middlesex county!), Mike Tasker was the victor. Bad luck Tom but thanks for turning out for us.
Alan Perkins has been in a rich vein of form and achieved another great result, this time with the black pieces against Bob Eames. John Quinn on top board had a tremendous success after reaching a queenless middlegame. His dark square control hindered his opponent's development and when his foe broke this hold, his king became exposed and after John gave up his extra pawn to open lines, he launched a decisive attack with rooks and bishops.
In recent years at the Harvester Ealing have cleaned up on lower boards against Hackney but this time our North-East London rivals were ready for us. We lost on board eight and one board up, I was battling against a combination of my opponent's good moves and my relentlessly ticking clock. A toxic mixture but a well-timed exchange sacrifice secured me a draw. Ealing 3.5 - Hackney 2.5.
Adrian Ociepka achieved an excellent attacking position and a material advantage. When he picked up his queen to give what we, the spectators thought was the coup de grace, checkmate on h8, we were dismayed to see the queen land elsewhere but even so he won two moves afterwards. A terrific performance by Adrian but he had to take some jokes in the bar afterwards.
Simon Randall was our last player to finish and he showed the value of good endgame technique. Moving quickly and surely after the first time control, Simon exploited his extra piece in a position where further pawn exchanges might have drawn.
