"Those who say they understand chess, understand nothing" -- Robert HUBNER

A Missed Opportunity?

This posting whilst under the aegis of Ealing chess club is more a personal experience aroused by an article on Chessbase. Would you play chess against two mass murderers?

Around fifteen years ago at two successive dinner parties, I was invited by a chaplain to enter a prison to compete against a serial killer. Before any of my audience get too excited, I refused the offer or rather more accurately demurred with the intention to say no if pressed later. Ian Brady, the Moors Murderer was mooted as my first opponent but in chess terms, I was downgraded to Graham Young, the St Albans Poisoner who was described by Brady on the Chessbase/Edward Winter as an excitable opponent.

Regrets? No, because for the wrong reasons I did not accept an offer which I should have refused outright. Cold hearted although my current view may appear, temptation for five minutes of fame should be resisted when killers call.
