The President's Simultaneous
: Created:02 Sep 2011 , byJohn Quinn, our president and former British under 21 champion gave a simultaneous display aginst Ealing members and prospective members on 1st September. His result of nine wins, two draws and two losses was very praiseworthy but many of his opponents performed excellently.
Thomas Dunne and Jason Obihara were winners on the night. Thomas who is not yet an Ealing member defended well under pressure and found a good tactic to capture John's queen. Jason who has been in tremendous form this summer looked to be in difficulty when John established pawns on f5, e6 and g6 but somehow two of the pawns were lost along with the game.
Martin Loat defended with the Robatsch Defence and very sensibly kept his king in the centre when John attacked down the king's side. I was impressed with Martin's calm play when under pressure and he thoroughly deserved his draw. Club stalwart Dale Gibbons also drew.
The loss by Carlo Paglialunga was a tragedy because after Carlo made the good choice of the Czech Benoni Defence John's kingside attack ground to a halt and an oversight cost John a piece. Quiet development of his queenside pieces would have been decisive for Carlo but instead he horribly blundered and lost a rook. An unlucky defeat. David Housego was another left to rue a lost opportunity becuase a few moves before the end of the display he appeared to have sufficient counterplay to secure a draw but John produced a brave sequence that ws adjudicated as a victory for him.
Sam Sarna's game was another thriller with John's late attack on weak squares around Sam's king just outweighing Sam's two passed pawns on the queenside. meanwhile John ground down David Websdale and Trevor Bates, conquered his bete-noir of the last two years John Harvey and won easily against the remainder of his opponents.
