As expected the Ealing U130 championship proved to be popular, attracting 8 participants. We were particularly delighted to welcome two new members, Trevor Bates and Carlo Paglialunga. Both will be great assets to the club. In addition, the ‘regulars’ showed their loyalty with Gerry Blick, David Websdale, Anthony Wood, Amardeep Sachdev, Leszek Sarama and Geoff Richards once again competing.

Consistent with previous years the games were characterised by fighting and combative chess, with few short draws. Both Trevor and Carlo imposed their will on this tournament, each scoring a highly impressive six points out of seven and emerging joint winners. From what I saw of their games, neither seemed to ever have a bad position. Gerry performed over 20 points above his ECF grade to finish third. Apart from slipping up against Trevor, he played consistently well. David, who came close to winning this competition the previous year, finished a creditable fourth with three and a half points. Other players had their moments of glory. Of particular note were Geoff’s exploitation of a passed c-pawn against Tony; the verve and vitality of Amars’ attack against Geoff’s hapless king; and the power of Anthony’s rollling e and f-pawns against David. Finally,a word about the venerable Leszek. Although now 87, he retains a child-like enthusiasm for the game which is an inspiration to us all. Long may he continue to play.
