Hillingdon Cup Rd.2

: Created:10 Apr 2013 , by Alastair Johnstone

Ealing’s second string cup team put up a valiant display before ultimately having to give best to a strong Harrow line-up.

Last night at the Harvester our Hillingdon Cup B team hosted the second round Cup match against Harrow A. We were outgraded by an average of about 60 points on all boards, so we were not expecting to win by a significant margin. The result was 4.5 - 0.5 in Harrow's favour, but the games were closer than might be guessed from the score.

On board 2, Carlo was first to finish, annoyed with himself for a blunder that lost material in an exchange sequence that could have been executed to give him a winning advantage.

Next to me on board 4, Zak looked comfortable in his middle game, but then lost the exchange. A few moves later he resigned.

David, on board 5, just about survived a powerful attack on his castled king, when his opponent allowed a knight to be captured for a pawn. This left an endgame with R+N+3p vs. R+5p and a draw was agreed. Ian, in his first game for the club, played well, but eventually conceded with a lost endgame in sight.

Finally on board 1, Martin reached the time control (just) but with a pawn advantage in a knight+pawns endgame. I thought Martin might win, but in the final 15 minutes of rapid-play his opponent ground out a win by cleverly alternating pressure from one side of the board to the other, clearing the way for a pawn promotion.

So, what might have been a 2.5-2.5 draw ended up 4.5-0.5 against us, but more in keeping with the expectations of the outcome.
