"Those who say they understand chess, understand nothing" -- Robert HUBNER

President's Simultaneous

As always the members excelled themselves against our president, John Quinn in his annual simultaneous on Thursday 29th August. The Queen's Gambit Declined and the Scotch Gambit were much seen on the night.

The game of the night featured new member Ian McClen who defended with the QGD but had to suffer when John established a knight on e5. With Black's kingside rook on e8 John played a classic knight sacrifice on f7. Ian responded with a queen move that threatened checkmate and with pieces flying all over the board John went wrong. A post mortem found White's best continuation but it was all too late for John and he warmly congratulated his opponent on his victory.

Hristo Colov was also successful and longstanding club member John Harvey achieved a meritorious draw. The rest eventually fell to John's sure technique but there was plenty of exciting chess along the way.
