"Those who say they understand chess, understand nothing" -- Robert HUBNER

The World Junior Championship

It was a vintage championship with Yu Yanghi claiming the title after an epic thirteen round contest. 2012 title holder Alexander Ipatov performed nobly to score 10.5 but he finished a half a point behind Yanghi.

Aleskandra Goryachkina won the girl's world championship.

For the British and indeed for Western Europe these championships should be a wake up call. All the successful young players were outside our shores right down to number ten in the listings.

If one was devise a Ryder Cup for chess, an European side headed by Magnus Carlsen would be competitive and with Russia counted in our ranks, strong for years ahead. Asia must be counted Europe's strongest rival even now.
