Anand 1 Carlsen 1

Although play lasted half an hour less than yesterday, this game was more of a genuine contest before repetition of moves resulted in a draw.

But where is the suspicion or downright hatred of your opponent that characterised many previous world chess championship contests? Anand and Carlsen sat next to each other backstage before this game. Guys this is not a friendly. Remember Botvinnik's matches or Steinitz v Zukertort or the vitriol that went into the Karpov versus Korchnoy series.

Carlsen surprised Anand by adopting the Caro-Kaan Defence to Anand's 1.e4. After opposite side castling spectators were optimistic of a slug-fest. Carlsen's 17...Qd5 gave Anand a choice between the conservative 18.Qxd5 and the exciting but double-edged 18.Qg4. Anand chose safety by exchanging queens and the heat went out of the game.

So where are the long games with which Carlsen was going to test his older opponent?
