Anand wins the Candidates Tournament

With one round to go Viswanathan Anand has an unassailable lead in the 2014 candidates tournament. It is a great achievement for Anand who was dismissed by many as too old at 44 years of age to come back onto the world championship stage.

Anand will challenge Magnus Carlsen in 2015 for the title but few will bet on him after his 6.5-3.5 defeat last time. Alexander Alekhine was 44 when he recaptured the championship and evergreen Mikhael Botvinnik was 49 when he beat Mikhael Tal in a rematch but those were different and less competitive times.

After Boris Gelfand's late flowering one should not dismiss anyone but Vesily Topalov and Peter Svidler have much to do if they are to re-establish their credentials for top honours.
