A Simultaneous Display by Alan Perkins
: Created:22 Sep 2014 , byTonight Alan who is a former English junior and student international took on fellow club members in a simultaneous. It was a good evening. As always at Ealing, members pay nothing to compete against our best player and learn a great deal about chess fundamentals.
By lot Alan gave his opponents the choice of playing black or white which was a brave start. Twelve members took him on and none of them were the pushovers seen in many displays. On this occasion Alan played using his normal reertoire and style so his oppenents had few winning chances.
Only in one game was he in danger of defeat. Simon Healeas troubled Alan with his Catalan Opening but Alan dug in and achieved a draw. In nearly all the remaining games he had the advantage and he was patience personified in snuffing out counterplay.
At the end of an enjoyable evening Alan conceded only four draws while winning eight games - 83%. Jason Obihara, Dale Gibbons and Trevor Bates were the others to secure a draw. None of the losers were disgraced and one was very close to a drawn game.
