Ealing 4.5 Hayes 0.5
: Created:28 Feb 2008 , byOur second team were victorious over Hayes tonight in the Hillingdon Plate competition
Captain Pierre Davis set a good example by winning quickly and Jason Obihara and Alex Gregory triumphed smoothly in their games on second and third boards.
On top board Martin Loat reached a fascinating king and pawn endgame where both players had connected passed pawns on opposite sides of the board. A terrific pawn thrust by Martin produced a study like position which the Ealing analysts proved to be a forced win after the end of the match. Some of the lines were both very attractive and truly educational. The only problem with this account is that under some clock pressure, Martin had already sensibly agreed a draw.
Geoff Richards completed Ealing's 4.5 - 0.5 victory after his opponent turned down his offer of a draw: risky and the downside to the ambitious approach.
Pierre's team march on and Ealing have fond hopes of silverware in our (virtual) trophy cabinet at the end of the season.
