For the third time in six years Ealing Chess Club have been crowned champions of the Thames Valley Chess league. The last match of the 2006-07 season saw our club visiting last year’s winners, Wimbledon and led by captain Mike Lamb, we were keen to gain revenge for a controversial defeat in March 2006 when the result was decided not over the board but in the committee room. Happily Ealing were the victors by 5.5 to 2.5 this time and the win enabled us to outdistance our main rivals, Surbiton and secure the title. However we must admit that runners-up Surbiton were the better side in our two fixtures with them but a surprise defeat by Wimbledon’s second team blunted their challenge for the top honours. The advent of the twenty-first century has seen Ealing establish itself as a top club in the Thames Valley league. Next season we will have two sides in the top two divisions for the first time in our history and a new team in the fourth division in order to encourage our developing players. Good times are ahead for Ealing.
