A great victory for Ealing in our opening fixture in the Middlesex league

(Report based on comments by Chris Greenshields)

Venue: West London

Last night (1st October) saw Ealing B get off to an excellent start in the Middlesex League
Divison 2, away to West London B. Ealing were white on odds.

We welcomed Raj Jhooti as a new recruit to the team who, as far as I am aware,
has never played a league chess match before. He then proceeded to win in 10 moves with Black. Well done.

Miguel Sanchez triumphed with a classic kingside attack. John Harvey won quickly although his opponent missed a checkmate in one! Chris Greenshields and Syrym Shalabayev added good victories after reaching favourable endings and Mark Winterbotham had a solid draw.

In the final match, Alastair Johnstone showed great sharpness in time trouble and,
taking the advice of our Summer speaker, Peter Sowray on activating the king, managed to promote a pawn.
He then visibly relaxed and scared the onlookers by missing a mate in one,
but had enough time to win nevertheless.

So 6.5-1.5: A great result with some very good performances. Let's enjoy this
one while we can. Next match: Imperial 1sts !*?!?
