Ealing B 4 - Imperial A 4

A tough struggle went down to the last game

(Report by Chris Greenshields)

Ealing 2nd team welcomed Imperial 1st team to the Harvester, an almost
unimaginable fixture bearing in mind Imperial beat our 1st team 8-0 two years
ago. However, with Imperial having lost some of its stronger players
following relegation last year, and Ealing having gained strength throughout
all its teams, the sides was well matched. Such is the strength of our 1st
team now, that David Ebbett was able to make his debut in the Middlesex
league 2nd team.

The first result of the night was on board 8, where Jin gained a completely
won position which he then managed to complicate by walking his king through
the middle of a congested board. Still, another win for Jin - well done.

Parity was quickly restored when Alastair lost with black on board 7, his
opponent calculating well to win a piece. On board 5, John played out a draw
in what looked like an interesting, finely balanced game.

Board 1 gave us what Alastair described as a "beautiful draw" with an exciting
endgame. Sainbayar said he missed a win at some point, but it was
nevertheless a good result against a strong opponent. On board 3, I found
myself in an ending in which my opponents pieces were very immobile. My
opponent sacrificed the exchange to get some activity, but I had time to
bring my other pieces into the game and prevent his progress. A promoting
passed pawn brought an end to the game. 3-2 to Ealing.

On board 4, Syrym seemed to expose his opponent's king at the cost of some
material. His opponent was able to get his king to safety and then generate
an attack of his own to win the game. Congratulations must go to Syrym's
opponent who I believe was playing his first competitive chess match. On
board 6, Simon got into an ending that was materially level but in which his
opponent's knight seemed to be better than Simon's bishop. His opponent
played a strong endgame and won. 4-3 to Imperial.

The final match to be decided was board 2, where our debutant David had a
strong position and attack in the final 15 minutes of the 3 hour playing
session. While his opponent layed several dangerous traps, David showed
sharpness, concentration and composure that would shame the more youthful
members of the chess club. The game ended with a fantastic attack that
forced resignation, with mate one move away, triggering spontaneous applause
from onlookers from both teams. A fantastic win to draw the match, scores
