West London A 1.5 - Ealing A 6.5

Ealing moved to four wins from four matches in division one of the Middlesex league with this away win over West London.

Grid-lock traffic problems and the closure of the District line for a period, made travelling arrangements a nightmare when we visited our nearest neighbours, West London, tonight. I, the captain, was not present until twenty odd minutes after the start. The delays were also a problem for at least one of our opponents. I thank West London for their sportsmanship.
Simon Randall abandoned his car and ran the last part of his journey to make this fixture. He rewarded us with a quick win on board four. Sainbayar Tserendorj broke through with a fierce attack down the central files against his opponent's exposed king. and I benefitted from a faulty queen manouevre by White in a Blackmar-Diemer Gambit to win a piece. 3-0 Ealing.
Mike Lamb who filled in with great distinction for his absent captain in the chaotic opening scenes of the match, added a valuable half a point to our total as a substitute. Fittingly it was Adrian Ociepka who clinched the victory when he defeated Colum Jezierski, a colleague when Adrian plays for West London in the London league. Ealing 4.5 West London 0.5.
This left boards one, two and three for decision. Jim Poulton had to give best to experienced Mark Lyell on board one. It was a bad day for the Scotch Game because Jim's lack of success with the White pieces was replicated on board two when Sean Butler went down to a second rank attack by Martin Smith's rooks aided by a heavyweight, Black knight on e3. Alan Perkins extended our winning margin with a smooth performance against John Burke's Old Indian type defence.
