Captains Comment
In our first match of the New Year at the end of the evening we were ahead by 2 ½ - 1 ½, with one game adjourned.
On Board 1, Tony played white in the English and gained the initiative out of the opening. He then pushed his pawn to e4 intending to clear the centre for his well placed rooks and bishops. Unfortunately this looked so strong he didn’t calculate the tactics and it should have lost him a bishop. Luckily black missed this and immediately blundered in turn which should have cost him a knight. Tony missed this and instead unnecessarily dropped a pawn. He then played aggressively and won the pawn back and then another. The game ended in a draw, Tony a pawn up but in a complicated position and short of time with a quick play finish looming. On the bright side, a draw against a good higher graded opponent but a badly flawed game.
Carlo, playing black on Board 2, opened against the English Pannov Attack. There were mistakes during the middle game by both players, However when the time control was reached, with queens and passed pawns for both black and white, black sacrificed a pawn for a passed pawn on the ‘d’ file, which Carlo then promoted a move ahead of white’s pawn promotion. Black now with two queens on the board forced checks on white’s king and then mate with pawn to g5! A good win by Carlo. 1 ½ - ½
Alex was white on Board 3 opening with the King’s gambit. During the opening and middle game he gained a piece but then overlooked a mating threat and lost. 1 ½ - 1 ½
David W, black on board four, played an Old Indian defence in reply to a queen pawn opening and was lucky to be gifted a Bishop early in the opening. Although a piece up David did not manage to further advance his position and the game was adjourned, still a piece up, but with Q+R+B+6P v Q+R+B+N+6P remaining on the board with plenty of active play ahead.
David H, played white on Board 1 against a Pirc modern defence by his opponent. He created a weakness in the centre with black having isolated doubled pawns on the ‘d’ file. White was able to capture one of these pawns and then forced an exchange of knight for rook. Material down black sacrificed a bishop to open up white’s castled king, but didn’t have enough resource to continue the attack. White, considerable material up, then pressed an attack on black’s weakened kingside. Black checked with his queen, but in continuing the attack allowed white to capture his queen. A queen and rook down and mate looming in a few more moves, black resigned. 2 ½ - 1 ½
With Ealing ahead and with David material up in his adjourned game on Board 4 a win for us in the match looks likely.
