Captains Comment
Last Monday we entertained our friends from Richmond D and emerged with a narrow win by 3.5 - 2.5.
On board 2 Chris Yapp had an even middle game position offering little opportunity for either player and a draw was agreed.
On board 1 Yad Rahman won a piece and then gradually wore down his opponent emerging with a clearly winning N + P v P endgame.
On board 4 John Harvey was obliged to tip his king so at the halfway stage we were even Stephen at 1.5 - 1.5.
On board 6 new member Muhammad Tabassum had a winning position with material advantage then unfortunately donated his queen by leaving it en-pris. However, demonstrating commendable coolness, he managed to engineer a repetition of moves to force the draw. Well done Muhammad!
On board 5 Alex Lushpa won when he had two advanced and separated pawns on the seventh rank that could not both be prevented from queening.
On board 3 Trevor Bates was the exchange up against his 153 rated (!) opponent but could not perceive any advantage from it and accepted the offered draw.
This result leaves us in second place on 5.5 points behind Surbiton (played one match fewer) on board difference and 0.5 points ahead of third placed Maidenhead (played two matches fewer) so we may yet achieve promotion if we win our final match against Surbiton and other results go our way.
