Created:26 Nov 2010 by: Alastair JohnstoneTwo divisions separate their first teams in the league but Hounslow put up a fine show at the Harvester to run Ealing very close in this round one contest for the Thames Valley cup.
..moreThames Valley League
Created:22 Nov 2010 by:It is early days of course but it is pleasant to see ourselves in top spot in both divisions one and two of the Thames Valley league. There is lots of time for events to change radically but nonetheless it's a good start to the 2010-11 season.
League positions are...
..moreTony Wheatley
Created:22 Nov 2010 by:We are saddened by the news that Tony Wheatley died in the morning of Thursday 18th November. Tony was secretary of our club for four seasons and represented us as a player 309 times, a great record for which Ealing will ever be grateful.

..moreCarlsen withdraws from Candidates Matches
Created:06 Nov 2010 by:The chess world will be dismayed that Magnus Carlsen has decided not to play in the 2011 March-May Candidates matches. The possibility of an eventual match for the title between the Old Lion, Anand and the Young Pretender, Carlsen was an eye-watering prospect.
His letter withdrawing from participating follows plus an article by John Saunders copied from his blog.
Leonard Barden's article in The Guardian today (13.11.10) is also attached. The sting is in the tail of his piece. Does he know something we don't know?
..moreThe New Season
Created:28 Sep 2010 by:With ninety-nine league fixtures on the Ealing list and at least four more cup matches, it is going to be a challenging season.
In the Thames Valley and Hillingdon leagues time limits will be faster (42 moves in 90 minutes) but compulsory quickplay finshes are still Beyond the Pale. Thankfully the laughable division one London league rules regarding quck/slow plays on alternate boards were rejected.
The Middlesex league confined itself to defining board order differences to ten ECF grading points. A sensible clarification.
..moreIvanchuk is the star of the Olympiad

..morePeter Sowray's Chess Talk - Bent Larsen.
Created:25 Sep 2010 by:Peter's subject for Thursday's demonstration was Bent Larsen who sadly recently died. The great Dane took extraordinary risks to win and Peter examined two of his games, both of which were unfamiliar to his audience who were gasping with astonishment by the end of the second. Larsen had excellent records against the very best players of his time and in the historic chess match of 1970 between USSR and The Rest of the World took first board for the ROW team ahead of Bobby Fischer.
Ealing players were their usual voluble selves in suggesting improvements and variations and we all had a rollicking good time.
Peter ended the evening by sportingly showing an endgame that as a young player he lost against a current Ealing member.
..moreEaling's Hall of Fame
Created:18 Sep 2010 by:Captains are the foundation of a successful chess club. Two names stand out in the list of our captains since World War 2: Dale Gibbons and John Harris.
Dale was the leader of an Ealing team for twenty-four seasons starting in 1984 and ending only last year. John's record of captaincy began in 1981 and ceased after twenty times in charge in 2006.
