Steve Gibbs wins the 2009 Summer Tournament

With eleven and a half points Steve won Ealing's Summer championship by a handsome margin and only defending titleholder, Simon Healeas got anywhere near to the victor's score.

Ealing Fixtures 2009-10 Latest

Below are the Middlesex, Thames Valley and Hillingdon league fixtures for the coming season.

As last year we are entering seven teams into three leagues in the coming season. Our policy is to encourage members to play in a team whatever their current standard in the belief that competitive chess will improve their game. All club members will be selected for a league team if this is their wish.

Captains will be: David Ebbett (Middlesex 1), Simon Randall (Thames Valley 1), David Reichenberg (Hillingdon 1), Chris Greenshields (Middlesex 2), Alastair Johnstone (Thames Valley 2), Jerry Ball/Gerry Blick (Hillingdon 2), Geoff Richards (Thames Valley 3).

John Quinn wins the 104th Ealing Chess Championship

Tonight John was victorious over Martin Smith's Tchigorin Defence in the 104th final. Congratulations to John and commiserations to Martin.

The sharper-eyed among you will have noticed that the 105th championship (2009) has already been won by Chris Greenshields but it is good news that our club championship is officially up-to-date.

We expect to feature both championship finals in the upcoming edition of Chess Knight, Ealing's sixty plus pages magazine.

The 14th Ealing Lightning Championship

Adrian Ociepka triumphed in yesterday's annual lightning tournament with 9 points. Raj Jhooti and Anuurai Sainbayar were also crowned as champions in the under 155 and under 125 grading brackets respectively.

I could've been a contender

The movie buffs among you will recognise the line as one of Marlon Brando's from On the Waterfront.

Sadly we at Ealing chess club missed our chance to be on TV tonight in the BBC 4 programme Only Connect. Back in February I was contacted by Gogglebox Entertainment with an offer for individual members to try out for a prospective programme not directly based on chess. The notice was very short and none of us was able to go to Hammersmith for the selection process.

This evening presided over by the excellent Victoria Coren, the team of Chessmen did our game proud winning with 36 points against the Puzzle Writers who achieved only 14 points. To a first time viewer the questions which were partly knowledge and partly logic seemed pretty hard. Would the inclusion of an Ealing member have approved the Chessmen's score. Of course!
